Our hydrogen network will extend from the North Sea down to Bavaria and will be an integral part of the European pipeline transmission system.
All components of the OGE infrastructure shown below can already be used for hydrogen today or can be converted to hydrogen with manageable effort. We are developing the hydrogen network by gradually repurposing our pipeline system or – where necessary – by building new pipelines. As early as 2024, we will offer access to Germany’s first regional hydrogen network. Customers can also be supplied outside the corridors shown, for example through distribution lines or selected new build projects.

East Frisia
With its proximity to the North Sea, East Frisia offers two key advantages: hydrogen production is ideally situated to benefit from the area’s renewable energy potential and the region will be an important destination for hydrogen imports. The first landing points for hydrogen will be Wilhelmshaven and Emden, which our infrastructure will connect to Germany’s hydrogen transmission network.
Get H2
As part of the GET H2 Nukleus and H2morrow projects, OGE has joined forces with partners such as bp, Evonik, Nowega, thyssengas, Equinor, thyssenkrupp Steel Europe, RWE Gas Storage West and RWE Generation to build a 130 km hydrogen network offering non-discriminatory access at transparent rates. The network will connect the hydrogen production site or import point from the Netherlands with industrial consumers in Lower Saxony and NRW, with hydrogen demand structured via connected storage facilities.

Ruhr Region
The Ruhr region has a long tradition as a mining and industrial location. It is Germany’s largest and most densely populated conurbation. But the region is changing and increasingly needs green energy. With the Ruhr region being OGE’s core service area, we operate a highly integrated pipeline system that offers an excellent starting point for the timely development of a hydrogen infrastructure. The H2 cluster in Hagen is an example of a local project bringing hydrogen into the region.
Cologne
The greater Cologne area with its surrounding conurbations offers great potential for the use of hydrogen by the chemical and energy industry. Demand can be met by supplies from Belgium and from the north.
Rhine-Main region
The region between the Rhine and the Main is home to companies from a wide range of industries along the value chains. The chemical industry in particular, with its energy-intensive processes, requires sustainable solutions for the use of future-proof energy sources.
Bavaria
The goals of the Bavarian hydrogen strategy are high-tech products and services, innovation and climate protection. To serve these goals, OGE will provide an east-west link from the Czech border to the Rhine-Neckar triangle using the existing natural gas infrastructure and convert a branch line towards the important industrial centres in Ingolstadt and Regensburg to hydrogen.
H2ercules. The fast track for hydrogen
OGE and RWE have set up the national infrastructure project H2ercules, which will supply consumers in the south and west of Germany with green hydrogen produced in Germany and imported from abroad. RWE is planning to build up to 1 GW of new electrolysis capacity for this project, while OGE will provide 1,500 km of mainly repurposed natural gas infrastructure but also new dedicated hydrogen pipelines. Extending across the different stages of the value chain, this approach will solve the chicken-and-egg problem of the hydrogen ramp-up on an XXL scale while also paving the way for other projects.
